Sanya

Sanya beachSanya is the beautiful southern city of Hainan island. It’s sand is nearly white and it stays warm year round. Last winter when I went it was warm enough to wear shorts and a t-shirt, but swimming was not popular due to the chilly water. There is a long row of new luxury resorts, many still under construction. In the winter it was not crowded and we easily found a hotel without a reservation. You can get to Hainan by air or train from Guangzhou. Wait…ride a train onto an island, you say? Yes, it is indeed true that there is an overnight train departing from Guangzhou and arriving in Hainan…by ferry. The train is split into sections and loaded on an enormous ferry that then crosses the strait.

Sanya beach funWhen you arrive in the northern city of Haikou there is nothing much to do but head south to Sanya. You can take a bus directly there or hire a driver to take you on a leisurely route. There are many scammers who will try to take you to some questionable “tourist sites” so you may just want to take the bus. There is a small monkey-reserve island on the east side that is worth a visit if you want to break up the three-hour drive. The monkeys roam freely, so don’t bring snacks or they will snatch them away. At Sanya you can enjoy all the typical beach activities as well as eat some delicious seafood. Be cautious of the many experienced rip-off artists that lurk about. Wherever you travel, it’s always a good idea to plan your activities in advance and not allow crafty salesmen to sway your decisions.
