Give Guilin and Yangshuo four days by default: enough time to arrive through the gateway, move toward Yangshuo, protect two landscape blocks, and keep some weather flexibility.

- 5 days: more resilience for weather, family travel, or photography.
What each place contributes
Guilin is the main transport gateway and can hold a short city or riverfront stay. Yangshuo is the stronger base for countryside, river time, cycling or walking, and slower mornings around the karst scenery.
A late arrival may justify the first night in Guilin. An early flight may do the same at the end. The correct split starts with the real arrival and departure times.
Three days: a tight extension
Three days can work when the inbound and outbound connections are efficient. Expect one gateway or transfer block and two useful landscape days.
There is limited protection for rain, river conditions, or a delayed arrival. Do not add this section if it forces another main stop into one rushed day.
Four days: the recommended default
Four days gives the region a clearer shape: arrive through Guilin, move toward Yangshuo without rushing, protect two different outdoor or landscape blocks, and keep one flexible period for weather or a slower town evening.
This is the default China Go uses for a first planning preview.
Five days: weather resilience and a slower pace
Five days suits travelers who want more than one river or countryside experience, prefer photography, travel with family, or do not want every outdoor activity locked to a single weather window.
The extra day should create flexibility, not another distant day trip.
Where it fits in a wider China route
From Beijing or Shanghai, compare a flight with the complete long-distance rail journey. From Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, or Hong Kong, rail may fit more naturally depending on the current timetable and your exact next stop.
Measure hotel to hotel. Yangshuo railway station and Guilin airport are not the same as arriving at a Yangshuo town-centre hotel. Confirm the exact station, onward road transfer, and final check-in time.
Keep one part of the plan flexible
Outdoor activities can be affected by weather, water conditions, visibility, and operator availability. Avoid writing a non-refundable chain in which every day depends on the previous activity running exactly on time.
